I have had my eye on a tilt shift lens for ages but after my trip to Phoenix in March and seeing what the super talented Richard & Amy of Red Leaf Studios could do with this lens made me want it even more.
I found this great site which helps you fake it but it’s just not the same.
Then last week I had the bright idea of hiring a tilt shift lens, thinking that if I struggled with the focusing & composing then I could move on and lust after another piece of kit. Found this brilliant company Hire A Camera, for £53 I hired it for the weekend, they delivered it Friday morning and collected it Monday afternoon – easy as pie. I would definitely hire specialist kit again for a wedding etc
So I suggested to Brian, out of the kindness of my heart, that we take the boys down to Adventure Island at Southend for the afternoon on Saturday. There just happens to be a viewing platform overlooking the esplanade, the high angle is ideal for the miniature village effect that the tilt shift is famous for – a cunning plan you might think LOL.
The first image is taken with 24-70mm at 45mm f2.8L and the second TSE 45mm f3.5 – love the effect

I don’t understand the technical side of it but its really cool . . . . . . . .

The part I’ll use the most is the selective focus and almost crazy DOF it produces

On Sunday afternoon I took a trip with Lesley to the top of 1 Canada Water unfortunately the weather didn’t co-operate but I did manage to test the TSE a little more. I added the Canon x2 Extender, and it became 90mm and gave me a little more range.

There just happened to be this lonely little TSE 45mm on ebay with no bids finishing sunday night, guess who is the new owner of that lens
